Racial Identity Development for the Therapist

Presented by: Lola Osunkoya, MA, LPCC; Founder, Neither/Both LLC

This experiential workshop will provide opportunities for clinicians to explore their own racial identity formation and development as a means to more effectively engage in cross-cultural counseling.

Participants in this two-hour how training will learn to:

  • Use two models of racial identity development theory to identify multiple contexts in which racial identity develops.
  • Understand how broad structures (white supremacy and white-normativity, hetero-normativity, sexism, transphobia, etc.) impact racial identity and cross-cultural relationships.
  • Model authenticity in the therapeutic relationship by acknowledging the strengths and challenges of the therapist’s own ongoing journey through identity work.

Therapists of Color are strongly encouraged to attend. Ten of the thirty available seats at this training will be reserved for Therapists of Color.

Please note:  This workshop centers around the racial identity development of therapists of all racial backgrounds; this is not a training centered on the common educational paradigm of White therapists learning to work with People of Color.
