Lisa Ann Miles

RN, MSN, CNM, NP

My passion for women’s health led me to work with women and their partners as they struggled with infertility… I know the ins and outs of infertility as well as treatment which included ovarian stimulation, intrauterine insemination and IVF.

I began my career in 1985 as an Intensive care registered nurse (RN). I worked in ICU for the first 10 years of my career. In my early 30’s I received the ”call” to be a midwife. I returned to school and obtained a Master’s of Science in Nursing and certificate to practice as a certified nurse midwife (CNM). My first job as a CNM was in Rockford, Illinois. I cared for women who were economically disadvantaged. Two years later, I moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where I worked at the University of Minnesota. I loved helping women and their family’s through the birth process. I practiced as a midwife for eight years.

My passion for women’s health led me to work with women and their partners as they struggled with infertility. I was employed as an advanced practice practitioner at the Reproductive Medicine Center (RMC) at the University of Minnesota. I know the ins and outs of infertility as well as treatment which included ovarian stimulation, intrauterine insemination and IVF. I worked in this area for five years.

Sexual health was an area I found myself drawn to and I was fortunate to work with Dr. Eli Coleman at the Program in Human Sexuality at the University of Minnesota. I was a part of the healthcare team responsible for evaluation and treatment of compulsive sexual behavior, sexual offenders, gender dysphoria and the psychological and pharmacological treatment of a variety of sexual dysfunctions. I did this concurrently as I worked on my post master certificate to become an advanced practice nurse specializing in mental health. I completed this program in 2012.

With this additional skill set I provide psychiatric medication management and I’m able to assess, diagnosis and treat mental illness. I currently find my focus split between providing mental health care for underserved populations with serious persistent mental illness and women in need of mental health care preconception, during pregnancy, postpartum and beyond. I currently work at the Community University Healthcare Center (CUHCC) in Minneapolis and at Lyn-Lake Psychotherapy & Wellness.

Understanding our relational  approach can give you a sense of how psychotherapy can help. Unlike counseling and other types of therapy, it takes a perspective that’s both deeper and broader. By focusing on emotions, it seeks to discover hidden pieces of who you are and then to understand how those pieces fit together.
